Reader Review: This excellent book covers *all* the important issues related to owning a handgun for self protection. I had heard that Ayoob was the definitive writer on the subject, and after reading this book I see why. The book is short enough that it can be easily read in a couple evenings, but long enough to thoroughly cover all the important issues. No matter your experience level with hand guns, this book is a must read. There is something in it for everyone. I have passed the book on to very experienced friends, they have said the same thing. The book is just *excellent*. |

Regardless of whether you're a beginning or
experienced shooter, this book has something for everybody. It contains a wealth of
information, and will answer any lingering questions you might have about handgun shooting
using easy to understand language. It describes the differences between single-action and
double-action mechanisms, handgun parts nomenclature, the definitions of misfire, hangfire
and squib loads, pistol cartridge history and much more. It's loaded with photographs and
illustrations that show everything from the cross section of a barrel to show how caliber
is determined, and the lands and grooves that comprise the bore's rifling, to photographs
of shooting technique details. Perhaps the most valuable part of the book is Appendix D, Common Shooting Errors. Appendix D contains eight illustrations of bullseye targets that permit you to diagnose shooting errors which cause bullets to go everywhere but the X-ring. This information is priceless to a shooter who's frustrated with his/her shooting performance, and can't understand the reasons why. All marksmanship problems can be traced directly back to errors in performing basic techniques, regardless of whether your a new shooter, a novice or you have years of shooting experience. Appendix D helps you to determine which particular error is responsible for your poor performance. Each illustration is accompanied with a detailed explanation of the cause. |
| Armed & Female by Paxton Quigley

Ms. Quigley, writer and firearms trainer for women, makes a
case I've seen nowhere else that gun control has its most pernicious effect on women and
poor blacks. Poor blacks are disproportionately affected by violent crime since bad
neighborhoods are the only ones they can afford to live in, and they are least able to
recover from property or violent crime. Women in unfortunate relationships with unstable
men are likely to suffer assault or murder owing to being physically less able to repel an
attacker -- unless they have an equalizer. Much of the rest of the book covers the basics of firearms, their use, and their ownership. Some of the basics are very basic indeed, so I recommend this book to firearms novices of _any_ gender, not just women! |
| The Law of Self-Defense: A Guide for the
Armed Citizen by Andrew F. Branca

This book is required reading for all lawful gun owners. Andrew Branca, an attorney and lawful gun owner, has produced an important essential book that is, in my opinion, a "must read" for anyone considering lawful gun ownership. The focus of this scholarly book pertains to the laws concerning use of a firearm in self-defense. Topics covered include the law of self-defense, duty (of the gun owner) to retreat, the "Castle doctrine", excessive force, necessary and reasonable behaviour, and legal citations to recent case law in the U.S. This book dispells much of the incorrect, confusing and potentially dangerous information offered by well-intentioned but uniformed gun owners. The book is well-written, carefully researched and should be essential reading for all lawful gun owners About the Author Andrew is an NRA-certified firearms instructor for pistol, rifle, and personal protection, and has previously instructed with AWARE (Arming Women Against Rape and Endangerment). Andrew has also been fortunate to have had the opportunity to receive instruction from excellent teachers, including Jeff Cooper, Ken Hackathorn, Bill Wilson, Massad Ayoob, and others. |

Documented cases of self-defense with a firearm "The Best Defense: True Stories of Intended Victims Who Defended Themselves with a Firearm" is a dramatic portrait of what is at stake in the fight against crime at the level where it occurs: victim vs. perpetrator. Each year, hundreds of thousands of American citizens successfully use guns to defend themselves and others. Often lost in the numbers, however, is the dynamic of what happens when ordinary, law-abiding citizens are attacked. What thoughts and feelings go through their minds as the events unfold? How do they react when suddenly thrust into a life-or-death situation? The fourteen chapters include twenty documented true stories. Charley Reese wrote, "Some chapters read like a suspense story, and they put the reader in the shoes of people whose normal, peaceful lives suffered the sudden and horrifying shock of a criminal attack. You will see that neither the police nor the courts can offer much protection...Trust me, this book is an exciting read, and the stories are true. It'll make a believer in the Second Amendment out of any sensible person."While there are many books debating the pros and cons of gun control, the Second Amendment, and the legal aspects of gun ownership, few if any relate true stories of encounters between criminals and victims. In these accounts, the victims survived and lived to tell about it. |
| The Concealed Handgun Manual : How to
Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense by Chris Bird, Ted Bonnet
List Price: Availability: Usually ships
within 24 hours. |
Especially good for folks for whom guns aren't a hobby. A most excellent primer on the carrying and use of handguns for self defense. Even though much of the information in the book may be otherwise available to people who read gun magazines and have owned firearms for years, the book is an excellent summary of the topic. There is a "mindset" to carrying a firearm for self defense, and Chris Bird accurately and calmly discusses this mindset. The gun magazines preach to the choir - Mr. Bird speaks to others. It is especially refreshing to find that a person who has lived in countries that abhor the notion of self defense can so strongly advocate this view. Maybe I will send copies of the book to my Canadian cousins... |
