Mike Toma writing in Access
to Firearms, August 1999 Let the bells ring and the banners fly, this book romances the gun, and members of the gun culture deserve it...The plot of this novel is plausible and exciting...I read the book through in almost one sitting; it is a page-turner. Let me inform you that any book that does that for me rates 5 stars...This book is written for gun owners and as such will not appeal much to the Liberal/Socialists in our midst. I also found it very satisfying to read a suspense novel that had all the real world aspects of guns technically correct. All too often in books and especially TV this is not so. Considering Al's background this is not surprising. I found one fault with the book, it ends with you wanting more and it obviously begs for a sequel. Happily Mr. Voth is working on it as I write this. |

The Geis Newsletter Review: From the first page of his Introduction, Duane Thomas, a prolific writer about guns for magazines, and a man whom I would class a hands-on expert, shows a very engaging writing style, a clear, informal, detailed technical knowledge and an involving story-telling manner. It is a joy to read his inside information and judgments. He deals first with the controversy over the 'King of Combat Handguns' - the Colt .45 auto (which he admires but feels is flawed...), and then takes on the pros and cons of Double-Action Autos..., discusses Handgun Stopping Power..., Alvin York: Hero With a .45 Auto..., Firepower vs. the "One Shot Stop"..., Are Revolvers Obsolete?..., Just How Good is the .40 S&W?... And he delves into the arguments for and against owning a handgun, leaving most peoples' pretensions and nonthink in a shambles. There is a Gun Trivia Quiz, and A Few Closing Comments: City Slickers & Gun Nuts. Invaluable info and perceptions - especially for any writer who often or occasionally needs to put handguns in a story or novel. This is a keeper. |

by Evan P. Marshall, Edwin J. Sanow List Price: Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. Paperback (May 1996) Paladin Pr; ISBN: 0873648722 |
The publisher's press release: STREET STOPPERS is the long-awaited sequel to the controversial best-seller HANDGUN STOPPING POWER. Like the first book, STREET STOPPERS compiles the results of hundreds of real-life shooting incidents involving every major handgun caliber and usees that information to predict how the same loads might perform in future shootings. Not only does the new book provide the very latest results of actual police and civilian shootings involving guns and ammo from .380 Auto to .45 ACP, it gives the eagerly anticipated street results of the hottest new caliber on the market, the .40 S&W; the first formal presentation in print of the Strasbourg Tests, where live goats were used as test subjects; updated street results for exotic ammo, including Golden Saber, Gold Dot, and the venerable offerings from MagSafe, Glaser and others; a fascinating look at the development of Hydra-Shok ammo by its inventor; and a powerful new formula to predict handgun stopping power - the Fuller Index. Please understand that the results of Marshall and Sanow's work remain hotly debated and are the subject of great controversy and disagreement among experts. -- The Sight |
